A Gathering Place
Situated on the outskirts of Abilene Christian University, Allen Ridge is designed to be the catalyst that transforms a pasture into a vibrant mixed-use community. The existing pond and newly created event lawn support a dozen retail and restaurant destinations offering a variety of outdoor rooms for residents and visitors to gather and a home for community wide events.
True West Texas
The Allen Ridge project harnesses the rugged landscape of West Texas and takes advantage of a diverse palette of native plant material to compose an authentic and sustainable environment for people to enjoy. The site plan is dotted with hardy mesquite, prickly pear, and yuccas partnered with vibrant perennial shrubs which offer seasonal interest. Native grasses make up the backbone of the planting plan and creates a soft dynamic that plays on the West Texas breeze.
A primary focus for Allen Ridge is to enhance the connection between the architecture and infrastructure of the site. Stormwater captured from roof and roadway runoff is collected in the landscape and then filtered to the existing pond to supplement the site irrigation supply. By doing so, these intermittent waterways create another dynamic layer to the aesthetic and functional landscape.
